Codec player problem?

so i downloaded this movie from torrent. The format is avi and the size is 880 mb. but when i try to play it, it shows a 4 min video saying "Codec is missing. please download and install the codec from codecavil.com". i read that there's some sort of virus in the site so i don't wanna visit it. but i downloaded divX codec player from another site but still the video's not playing. if anyone knows what's wrong please help. and don't tell me that i've downloaded a wrong file. this has happened with many downloads from torrent. thanks in advance.
