How do I delete messages permanently on my N96?

I have deleted all of my text messages in my inbox, sent messages, emails, etc, but when I check my file manager it still says there is 44mb of messages on there after I have deleted nearly 1500 messages. Where are they hiding? Is there a way for me to clear this up without formatting my phone?
