I'm looking for a book, a children's novel, I read about 8 years ago?

It was about a world where people had marks on their hand in the shapes of whatever special abilities they had. The main story was about a girl whose father dies and her mother remarries to a cruel man who I seem to remember as the leader of the Village. I can't remember if he abuses her but somehow someone brands her with a poker from the fire and it's in the shape of an arrow. She runs away and meets a boy in the forest who can call down and heal birds. However the mark on his palm isn't a bird, it's a bow. He takes her to his home within a runaway community that fends for itself in the forest. I don't remember the title or author and the only name that sticks out is The Arrow of Maethor or something like that but I can't find it under that name anywhere!!!
